What a nightmarish existence. Stephen King could'nt write a more scary set of incidents. Once law and order break down, humans are capable of inhuman acts of brutality.
"The Assassins Gate" an account of the tragic invasion and occupation of Iraq is full of similar stories unfortunately.
Stockwell would have been right if he identified it as a civil war setoff by the invaders (mainly US and UK but including Australia).
Pre invasion Iraq had nothing to do with the War on Terror. But it does now due to the presence of Western forces and al Qaeda's willingness to attack them in Iraq.
i can't judge- i am obviously not in that situation. but--how do you live with yourself in that situation? how do you live with watching another human being die- and how do you live with cold bloodedly driving up to someone and shooting them dead? that is a soul killer right there.
I guess when they're not of your brand of faith, they don't qualify as human.
As for the bystanders, well, they have families I suppose, and aren't willing to sacrifice themselves to help others. Its become an every man for himself situation.
That's a very riveting article. I hadn't seen it before. It must take someone living under those conditions a lot of courage just to write it. Not to mention he is a Christian making him very much in the minority. It also shows the lawlessness in Baghdad. No police helped, no American troops helped, no Iraqi troops helped, no one helped.

I don't know what I'd say either, but if I did I'm pretty sure it would be seething with anger and profanity.
Stoic.
I don't know if I would even want to protect my life in the face of such paralyzing fear. It would seem as if I were already dead if I could not help.
